The Honble: Sr: Edward Hawke Vice Admiral of the White Squadron of His Majesty's Fleet, and Knight of the most Honourable Order of the Bath

A three-quarter-length portrait of Edward Hawke (1705–1781) in a brocade waistcoat and frock coat with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath, holding a telescope in his right hand. His hat rests on a stone plinth in the foreground and a naval engagement is depicted in the background. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘The Honble. Sr. Edward Hawke. Vice Admiral of the White Squadron of His Majesty’s Fleet and Knight of the most Honourable Order of the Bath.’ Also lettered with the publication line: ‘London. Printed for R. Sayer, opposite Fetter Lane, and J. Ryall & R. Withy opposite Salisbury Court in Fleet Street 1755.’ This print was published by Robert Sayer in 1755. The plate was originally engraved and published by John Faber the Younger in 1741 after a portrait of Chaloner Ogle (1681–1750) by the miniaturist Christian Friedrich Zincke (see PAF3682). The sitter’s head has been re-engraved and the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath have been added to make the portrait represent Hawke, instead of Ogle. The likeness of Hawke used in this print appears to have been modelled on George Knapton’s portrait, as engraved by James Macardell in 1747/8 (see PAF3453). The naval engagement in the background, which was designed to represent Ogle’s beginning the Attack on Fort Chamba in Cartagena on 9 March 1741, has not been altered. (Updated May 2019.)
