The Brave Admiral Jervis

A full-length portrait of John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent (1752–1820), in admiral’s full-dress uniform, 1795–1812, and hat with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath, holding his hat in his right hand and pointing with his left. He stands on the deck of ship with a sailor in striped trousers to his left and more sailors behind. There is a hole in the ship’s gunwale and billowing smoke in the background with a naval engagement in the distance. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘The Brave Admiral Jervis’, followed by a nine verse ballad about Jervis. Also lettered with the publication line, ‘Published 15th May 1797, by Laurie & Whittle, 53 Fleet Street, London.’ This print was published by Robert Laurie and James Whittle on 15 May 1797. The portrait is derived from a half-length oil painting by Gilbert Stuart, as previously engraved by Robert Laurie (see PAG6496). Here, the portrait has been extended to full-length and a battle scene has been added in the background, alluding to the victory of Jervis’s fleet over the Spanish at the Battle of Cape St Vincent on 14 February 1797. This victory is also referenced in the ballad printed beneath the image. (Updated June 2019.)
