Sir Philip Charles Henderson Calderwood Durham (1763-1845), as a captain

Print. This portrait of Durham shows him in captain's full-dress uniform, over three years seniority, 1795-1812, and so dates to after June 1796 since he became a captain in mid-1793. The original by Northcote is probably the canvas now in the National Galleries of Scotland (PG2866). It is most likely to show him when captain of the frigate 'Anson' (46 guns) which he commanded for six years from 1794 and in which, under Sir John Borlase Warren off southern Ireland in 1798, he took part in the defeat and capture of the French squadron off Tory Island on 12 October. For this action -probably that shown in the background- he and the other captains present received the thanks of parliament and a gold medal. This is not shown in the print but is present in the painting, possibly as a later addition (as sometimes the case) unless the canvas now in Edinburgh is not the version from which the print was made. Durham commanded the 'Defiance' (74), towards the back of Collingwood's division, at Trafalgar in 1805 (where he was slightly wounded in the leg) and this is probably the best image of him as a captain. It is unlikely that this print was first issued as late as 1821, since the medal he received for the action shown would have been included, so if may be a re-strike. BHC2383 is a John Wood's full-length oil of him as Admiral of the Red in 1844, with further details. [PvdM 10/13]
