A three-quarter-length portrait to left of Sir Charles Wager (1666–1743) wearing a velvet coat with embroidered buttonholes, a long wig and a sword belt. He holds the hilt of his sword in his left hand and rests his right hand on a telescope or long baton of command. He stands in front of a cliff overgrown with foliage with a view of his flagship on the right. Lettered beneath the image with the title: ‘The Honorable Sr. Charles Wager Kt. Vice Admiral of ye Red Squadron of his Majesty’s Fleet & one of ye Commissioners for executing the Office of Lord High Admiral of Great Britain.’ Also lettered with the production details, ‘J. Ellis pinx. 1726. / G. White fecit.’ This portrait was engraved by George White after John Ellis’s oil painting of 1726. The inscription refers to Wager as one of the lord commissioners of the admiralty, which he became in February 1717, and as vice-admiral of the red, which was his rank from March 1717 until July 1731. He later became an admiral and First Lord of the Admiralty. (Updated May 2019.)
