At the Breechloading Gun (reproduced in C R Low's H M Navy Vol III) (uniform)
After initial experiments with breech-loading guns failed, the Navy used muzzle-loading guns until the mid-19th century, but the introduction of armour plating to ships made the transition to breech-loading inevitable. It was the penetrative power of the latter which swung the balance and by 1890 breech-loading guns were fully established on Royal Navy ships.
