Loanda S. Pauli

A coastal view of the island of Luanda, capital of Angola, during the city's occupation by the Dutch (1641-48). The island had been colonized by the Portuguese in 1575 and became a major centre for the slave trade. Luanda means 'flat land' as the island is formed only of sand deposited by the Kwanza river. Keys to the print in the upper corners are in both English and Dutch. It was issued as two joined sheets.
