Oxford: the east end of the old Ashmolean Museum, looking towards Broad Street

Previously titled 'Harbour Scene' and thought perhaps to be in France, this is in fact a rare view by Everett of Oxford: no other by him has yet been identified in the NMM holding of his work - though it appears to be the sole oil painting. However, there is a well-finished view of the street front of Christ Church College and 'Tom Tower', Oxford, in the Sewerby Hall Museum, Bridlington, Yorkshire (ERYMS: 1993.64): this has a study of a barque lying at a quay on the reverse but how it got to that collection is unknown since listed as an 'untraced find' there. The present one is really a study of light and shadow, with sunlight falling on the north side of Broad Street and the east end of the old Ashmolean Museum building (now the Museum of the History of Science) in deep shade on the left. The shadow on the street facade suggests the sun if still in the east and, if so, the shade is created by the bulk of the Sheldonian Theatre which is immediately to the right, just out of frame. To the right of the arched gateway are three of the stone pillars of the railings round the curved north front of the Sheldonian, all of which are topped with monumental carved heads of Roman emperors.
