‘Combat de la Frégate française la Bayonnaise contre le frégate anglaise l’Embuscade (14 Dec. 1798.)’
The ‘Ambuscade’ was taken by the French ‘Bayonnaise’, 28 guns. Serving in the latter were 30 veteran soldiers of the Alsace regiment and they had a much larger crew than had the ‘Ambuscade’. The French soldiers were able to sweep the ‘Ambuscade’’s deck with gunfire as it had not been barricaded with hammocks. The British crew were ill-disciplined and their commander, Captain Jenkins, incompetent.
