La Rochelle: the Grosse-Horlorge, from the harbour
Oil painting, signed by the artist lower right. This was one of the ancient gates to La Rochelle, built in the reign of Guillaume X of France at the beginning of the 12th century as part of the original town walls. It became redundant with later enlargement of the town and in 1478 had the clock tower added. Today it is a French national historic monument. [PvdM 5/15]
