The Lord Melville 9 Nov 1823
A pencil sketch by John Christian Schetky of the stern of the ‘Lord Melville’ in port quarter view. The exterior colours of the decks have been annotated individually: ‘Black’, ‘Yellow’, ‘Copper’ and ‘Green’. Inscribed and dated ‘Lord Melville. 9th Nov 1823’ at upper right.
Of the two ‘Lord Melville’ vessels listed in Lloyd’s Register, it seems likely that this is the ship owned first by Witherby and later by Westgate; trading to South America, in the case of the first mentioned, and to Jamaica when owned by Westgate, who was also her commander.
