Seagulls and soldiers from Dover Castle 1940
This etching, also known as 'Observation Post with Gulls "Solomon & Sheba"', is a highly detailed view from the admiralty lookout at Dover Castle. On the left the city of Dover stretches across the coast. A barrage balloon is represented at left, alongside the seagulls that dot the image. Inside the sandbag barrier a group of men from the Royal Artillery sit working with a variety of telescopes. Throughout the image seagulls are interspersed and are represented as actively observing the working men. Signed by artist. This print is numbered 12/50.
The Imperial War Museum holds ‘Observation Post with Gulls,’ a commission from the War Artists Advisory Committee from 1941, of the same composition in ink and wash.
