A royal barge off Portsmouth
This is listed in the NMM 'Concise Catalogue' as just 'A royal barge'. It in fact shows a modern motor launch, possibly the barge of the RY 'Britannia' or the C-in-C Portsmouth under way at speed against the background of one of the offshore forts at Spithead, with large warships anchored in the right distance. The barge flies the white ensign astern and the Royal Standard at the bow indicating the presence of the Queen on board. It is probably a particular occasion, but this remains to be confirmed. The picture is signed by the artist lower right. [PvdM 7/11]
