Deck scene on board a trawler
Oil painting of a view down the outboard main-deck gangway of the large vessel concerned, apparently looking forward (i.e. port side) under an upper level extending out from the deck-house shown to the right: a companionway connecting the two decks is partly shown on the right. The day is sunny, the only area of sea shown a flat patch of blue to the left, and the whole composition is less representational than a study of the effect of the fall of light on the largely white-painted metalwork and the natural wooden deck in terms of planes, shapes, shadows and recession down the gangway, emphasized by converging lines of scuttles in the deckhouse bulkhead and ventilator head and deck-support stanchions along the ship's rail to the left. See BHC1657 for notes on the artist.
