Fid
A whalebone fid, a tool used in rigging and sailmaking. The bone would be taken from the lower jaw of a sperm whale. Two lines have been engraved round the upper end. This is an example of the more functional type of scrimshaw. It was possibly made by Captain William Tolley Brookes (1791-1874), master of the whale ship 'Active' in the 1830s.
