La Rochelle: study of figures on the quay of the outer harbour in front of the Tour de la Chaîne and Tour Saint-Nicolas
Everett's viewpoint is from the quay of the outer harbour, on land reclaimed from marshes opposite the entrance to the inner harbour, through the two medieval fortified towers (that of Saint-Nicolas to the right). The main shipping channel to seaward is north-westward, off to the left. The view is slightly oblique looking through the entrance and the square tower seen at left centre is that of the medieval church of Saint-Sauveur, in the old town east of the harbour basin.
