Album contains thirty-four leaves, and twenty-four unmounted drawings, PAG6010-PAG6093. 'Old Sea Wings, Ways and Words in the days of Oak and Hemp' is a book published in 1894 by the maritime writer Robert Charles Leslie (son of the painter C.R. Leslie RA, who was himself also a writer and the friend and first biographer of Constable). It covers the build and rig of the ships and boats of the past, matters of life on board, navigation instruments and seamanship and, as stated in its preface, was written after he showed John Ruskin various comparative sketches of boat and sails in December 1884 and received encouragement from him on the project.
