Portrait o the 'Vrede'

Portrait of the ‘Vrede’, built in 1650, 46 guns; she was last mentioned in 1667.

She is viewed from the port quarter. Topsails, main topgallantsail and mizzen are loosed; the fore course is in the brails. A flag is at the mizzen.

On the tafferel, a figure of Peace with palm and horn of plenty. On the rail above, the arms of Amsterdam (three saltires on a pale) between dolphins. Two shields on a counter, on the port side a lion rampant and on the starboard side crossed anchors for the Admiralty of Amsterdam.

The hull is rubbed on the back, but if there is an offset under the drawing it is a very faint one, and it may be that the drawing has had an offset taken from it.

There are two more detailed drawings of the ‘Vrede’, also viewed from the port quarter in the Boymans-van-Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam and also one from before the port beam. There are drawings from the port broadside in the NMM: PAH3837, PAH5009.
