The Dutch fleet off the land, October? 1658

The Dutch fleet off the land. In the centre, a view from the port beam of a two-decker with a flag and pendant at the main, presumably Van Wassenaer in the ‘Eendracht’, at anchor in shallow water. Hands aloft furling the sails. Beyond her is a ship with flag at the main and pendant at the mizzen (possibly ‘Joshua’) close-hauled on the starboard tack, coming under the ‘Eendracht’s stern. In the right foreground is a weather bow view of a small flute also on the starboard tack. A barge pulling towards the ‘Eendracht’ is on the right, and a galjoot before the wind is on the left. In the background are several ships beating to windward. Land is in the distance.

This is possibly the fleet on the coast of Jutland during its attempt to get round the Skaw.

Some crude wash in the foreground and some of the rigging of the ‘Eendracht’ has been added by a later hand.
