Portrait of the 'Edam Amsterdam'
Portrait of the ‘Edam’, carefully worked up with pencil and wash. She was built in 1644, 34 guns; she was taken by the English in 1665. She was also called ‘Zwarte Bul’ and ‘Wapen van Edam’.
The ‘Edam’ is viewed from the starboard bow. The masts and sails are shown as high as the tops. The fore course loosed. The figurehead appears to have been broken off. On the taffrail are dolphins supporting an arms.
There are two drawings of the ‘Edam’ in the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam, one (253) viewed from the port quarter and not in reverse, offset showing the view from the starboard quarter, which is in reverse (254).
