Portrait of the 'London'
Portrait of the ‘London’, second rate, 76 guns. She was built in 1656 and was accidentally blown up in 1665. She is viewed from before the port beam.
The jack has been drawn on a piece of paper pasted on the left, but there is no reason to doubt the authenticity of this part on account of the Irish saltire in the Union, as there are other examples of this in drawings made by Van de Velde about 1660.
It is rubbed on the back and perhaps a weak offset well worked up with pencil and wash; probably not in reverse as the entering port is shown, and a ship the size of the ‘London’ is unlikely to have had an entering port on the starboard side.
There is a drawing of the ‘London’ viewed from the port quarter in the Atlas van Stolk, Rotterdam; it was drawn at the same time.
