The Dutch fleet after the council-of-war 18 August 1665

The Dutch fleet after the council of war, 8 [OS]/18 August 1665, part of a series of drawings of De Ruyter’s voyage to Bergen, Autumn 1665.

The Dutch fleet lying-by, before its division into four squadrons. On the right is a port quarter view of a ship with flag at the mizzen and pendant at the main, probably Jan de Liefde in the ‘Groot Hollandia’. Ahead of her is a ship with flag at the main and pendant at the fore (possibly Cornelis Eversten in the ‘Hof van Zeeland’). In the left background is Tjerk Hiddes de Vries in the ‘Zevenwolden’.

The Dutch fleet then sailed northwards and another council-of-war was held off Buchan Ness.

Van de Velde left Holland in his galjoot with the fleet under Tromp in August, and when de Ruyter took over command, went with him to Bergen.
