Portrait of the 'Damiaten'

Possibly a portrait of the ‘Damianten’, built in 1663, 36 guns; she was last mentioned in 1689.

She is viewed from astern slightly on the starboard quarter with the wind on the port quarter, under main topsail half-mast high and fore topsail. Hands are furling the fore course and mizzen topsail. On the tafferel is a picture of a ship under sail between two towers. On the rail above are Jupiter astride and an eagle. Two shields are on the counter, on the starboard side is a lion rampant and on the port side crossed anchors for the Admiralty of Amsterdam.

The whole drawing is an offset, slightly worked up with pencil. The hull has been offset from a drawing by the Younger (PAF6496), and the masts and sails and ensign have been offset from another drawing. The drawing may be an offset worked up years later by the Elder.

In the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam, there is an offset showing the ship from the starboard quarter; it is not in reverse, but it is not related to the drawings in the NMM and although faint, it shows many details not in them.
