Dutch ships lying-by, May 1672

Dutch ships lying-by, May 1672. To the left is a weather quarter view of a two-decker close-hauled on the starboard tack under mizzen and topsails. A boat is alongside to starboard, and another pulling towards her in the right foreground. In the background is the stern view of a ship and another, starboard broadside view, with her main and mizzen topsails to the mast. Other ships under varying canvas are on the left. A high coastline is in the right distance.

Some additions in pen and brown ink may be by the Younger. A dotted line in brown ink by the stern of the ship in the foreground indicates the correct waterline to make the ship appear the right size relative to the other ships and boats.

It appears to have been drawn when Van de Velde was with the Dutch fleet before the battle of Solebay, May 1672.
