The 'Delft' with Dutch fleet at sea, May 1672

The ‘Delft’ with the Dutch fleet at sea, May 1672. On the left is a lee quarter view of the ‘Delft’ with the wind on the port quarter, under topsails and mizzen; a pendant at the main. On the right is a port quarter view of a galjoot. In the background are several other ships also with the wind on the port quarter, but in the centre, a lee bow view of a ship with flag at the fore and pendant at the main, close-hauled on the starboard tack.

A few slight additions in pen and brown ink may be by the Younger.

It appears to have been drawn when Van de Velde was with the Dutch fleet before the battle of Solebay, May 1672. The ‘Delft’ joined the Dutch fleet on the 10 [OS]/20 May but was with Van Ghent until 16 [OS]/26 May. She was in the centre squadron at the battle of Solebay, 28 May [OS]/ 7 June 1672.
