The Dutch rear squadron lying-by, May 1672
The Dutch rear squadron lying-by, May 1672. In the left foreground is a stern view of the ‘Dolfijn’ (Lieut-Admiral Van Ghent), a flag at the main and pendant at the mizzen, with a signal at the mizzen peak. She is stopped with her fore and mizzen topsails loosed, there are several boats pulling towards her and a galjoot lying on her starboard quarter. Many other ships are in the distance.
A galjoot and ship on the right haven been strengthened with pen and brown ink. In the same ink, near a boat in the foreground is the word ‘tis’ (this), and to the right a cross probably indicating that the boat should be more in the foreground for her size to be in the right proportion to the other vessels.
It appears to have been drawn when Van de Velde was with the Dutch fleet before the battle of Solebay, May 1672.
