The Dutch rear squadron in a quartering breeze, May 1672
The Dutch rear squadron in a quartering breeze, May 1672. The Dutch ships are viewed from the lee quarter with the wind broad on the port quarter. On the left is the ‘Amsterdam’ with a hooker or galjoot with a square-sail on her lee bow. In the centre middle-distance is Vice-Admiral Isaac Sweer of the ‘Olifant’. In the right distance is a rear-admiral, possibly De Haen, Vice-Admiral Schram in the ‘Pacificatie’, and Lieutenant-Admiral Van Ghent in the ‘Dolfijn’.
It appears to have been drawn when Van de Velde was with the Dutch fleet before the battle of Solebay, May 1672.
