The Dutch rear squadron lying-by, May 1672
The Dutch rear squadron lying-by, May 1672. On the right is a starboard quarter view of a large two-decker lying with her fore and mizzen topsails loosed and main staysail hoisted. A ship with topsails aback is on her port quarter. Two boats are in the left foreground; and Van Ghent in the ‘Dolflijn’, with a crowd of boats round her is in the distance.
A few touches with pen and brown ink have been added. It appears to have been drawn when Van de Velde was with the Dutch fleet before the battle of Solebay, May 1672.
