Portrait of an English two-decker
Portrait of an English two-decker, viewed from the starboard quarter.
The five foremost quarterdeck ports have small wreathed decoration round them the aftermost port, probably a light, has square decoration.
This is possibly the ‘Woolwich’, which in 1677 was the only fourth-rate to carry ten guns on her quarterdeck; but she was built in 1675 and small wreathed ports in combination with square-decorated ones were rather the distinction of an early ship. The drawing is a faint offset worked up with a little pencil and wash.
