Portrait of the 'Royal Sovereign'
Viewed from abaft the starboard beam, the ‘Royal Sovereign’, 100-gun first-rate, built 1701, broken up 1768. The channels and the entering port have been omitted. It is inscribed in brown ink ‘bildt et Wollis bij Mr haerdi is lenst op vrijdagh den 25 Julij 1701’ and ‘keer’ [turn over]. On the back, ‘Was 3 Jaer bij hant geweest in maecke’ [She has been three years building]. The ‘Royal Sovereign’ was built at Woolwich by Fisher Harding.
