Sir Charles Saunders, 1713?-1775

State before letters. A three-quarter-length portrait of Charles Saunders (c. 1713–1775) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–1767, with wig. Saunders holds the hilt of his sword in his left hand and grips the crown of an anchor with his right. Lettered beneath the image with Saunders’s coat of arms. This portrait was engraved in mezzotint by James Macardell after an original painting by Joshua Reynolds (see BHC3012). Reynolds’s painting was produced in spring 1760 and it was probably engraved around this time. For an impression of the print with letters, see PAF3691. (Updated April 2019).
