The Honble Augustus Keppel, First Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty...
A half-length portrait of Augustus Keppel (1725–1786) looking to right in a dark coat with one button fastened across his chest. The portrait is surrounded by a fictive rectangular frame. Lettered beneath the image with the title: ‘The Honble Augustus Keppel, First Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty. Original Picture in the Possession of his Grace the Duke of Richmond.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line with the date of publication partially removed but still legible: ‘Painted by G. Romney, 1779. / Engraved by W. Dickinson. / London, Published March 30th 1779, by Dickinson & Watson No.158 New Bond Street.’ This print was engraved by William Dickinson in 1779 after an original painting by George Romney, produced in 1776 for the Duke of Richmond and now at Goodwood House. It was originally published with an inscription describing the sitter as ‘Admiral of the Blue’ on 30 March 1779 to commemorate Keppel’s celebrated acquittal after a high-profile and politically charged court martial (see PAG6393). This version of the print was produced in 1782, since it features an amended inscription referring to the sitter’s appointment as First Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty on 30 March 1782. However, it does not mention his ennoblement as Viscount Keppel on 29 April 1782. (Updated May 2019.)
