Sir George Bridges Rodney Bart. Admiral of the White

A three-quarter-length portrait of George Bridges Rodney (bap. 1718, d. 1792) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–1767, leaning his right hand on the fluke of an anchor in front of an overhanging cliff and a view of the sea. Lettered beneath the image with the title: ‘Sir George Bridges Rodney Bart. / Admiral of the White.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘Painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds. / Engraved by J. Watson. / Published May 1st 1780, by John Boydell, Engraver in Cheapside, London.’ This portrait was engraved by James Watson after Joshua Reynolds’s oil painting of 1756–9, now at Petworth. The plate was initially engraved and published by William Wynne Ryland and Henry Bryer in 1762 (see PAG6409) and subsequently republished with an updated inscription by John Boydell in May 1780. The republication of the print followed Rodney’s famous victory against the Spanish off Cape St Vincent at the Moonlight Battle on 16 January 1780, which placed the admiral in the public eye. For the unlettered state of this print, see PAF3468 and, for the scratched letter state, see PAG9391. (Updated May 2019.)
