The Hon: Samuel Barrington. Admiral of the White, & Lieutenant General of Marines
A half-length portrait to left of Samuel Barrington (1729–1800) in vice-admiral’s undress uniform, 1787–1795. Lettered beneath the image: ‘The Hon: Samuel Barrington. Admiral of the White & Lieutenant General of Marines. From an original Picture by A. G. Stuart, in the Possession of the Earl of St. Vincent. Drawn by W. Evans. Engraved by G. Bartolozzi. Published Feb. 7. 1812. by T. Cadell & W. Davies, Strand, London.’ This print was engraved by Gaetano Bartolozzi after an intermediary drawing by William Evans of an original painting by Gilbert Stuart. The prime version of Stuart’s painting was produced in 1785 when the sitter was vice-admiral of the white and exhibited at the Royal Academy in that year. A version signed and dated 1786 is currently at Saltram. Barrington became admiral of the blue in 1787 and admiral of the white in 1794. He died in August 1800. (Updated April 2019.)
