The Honourable Samuel Barrington. Vice Admiral of the Blue and Commander in Chief of his Majestys Ships at the Reduction of St Lucia
A half-length portrait of Samuel Barrington (1729–1800) in flag officer’s full-dress uniform, 1767–1783. Lettered beneath the image with the title: ‘The Honourable Samuel Barrington Vice Admiral of the Blue and Commander in Chief of his Majestys Ships at the Reduction of St. Lucia.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘Sir Joshua Reynolds pinxt. / Richd. Earlom fecit. / London. Printed for R. Sayer & J. Bennett Map & Printsellers, No. 53 Fleet Street as the Act directs, 12th Feby 1780.’ This portrait was engraved in mezzotint by Richard Earlom after an original painting by Joshua Reynolds (see BHC2534). The print’s inscription refers to Barrington’s role in the capture of St Lucia from the French in December 1778, when his fleet provided naval support to General James Grant’s troops. This print was later republished in March 1791 (see PAG6437). (Updated April 2019.)
