The Honourable Samuel Barrington. Admiral of the Blue and Commander in Chief of his Majestys Ships at the Reduction of St Lucia
A half-length portrait of Samuel Barrington (1729–1800) in flag officer’s full-dress uniform, 1767–1783. Lettered beneath the image with the title: ‘The Honourable Samuel Barrington. Admiral of the Blue and Commander in Chief of his Majestys Ships at the Reduction of St. Lucia.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘Sir Joshua Reynolds pinxt. / Richd. Earlom fecit. / Published 1st. March 1791, by Robt Sayer, 53, Fleet Street, London.’ This portrait was engraved in mezzotint by Richard Earlom after an original painting by Joshua Reynolds (see BHC2534). The print was first published in February 1780 by Robert Sayer and his business partner John Bennett (see PAG6436). It was then reissued in March 1791 with a new publication line featuring Sayer’s name only, his partnership with Bennett having ended in 1784. The print’s inscription was also altered in 1791 with an update to Barrington’s rank: he had been vice-admiral of the blue in 1780 but was admiral of the blue in 1791. The print’s inscription refers to Barrington’s role in the capture of St Lucia from the French in December 1778, when his fleet provided naval support to General James Grant’s troops. (Updated April 2019.)
