A bust-length portrait of John Stewart (1774–1811) in captain’s (over three years) undress uniform, 1795–1812, with the ribbon of the naval gold medal that Stewart was awarded for his capture of the Turkish vessel ‘Badere Zaffere’, 50 guns, when in command of the ‘Seahorse’, 38 guns, in July 1808. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘John Stewart Esqr. Captain of His Majesty’s Ship Sea Horse.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘Engraved from an original Picture by C. Turner. / London. Published Sept. 30th 1812 by C. Turner, 50 Warren Street, Fitzroy Square.’ This portrait was engraved and published by Charles Turner on 30 September 1812. John Stewart served as a midshipman under Captain George Vancouver on his famous 1791–5 voyage, which explored and charted North America’s north-western Pacific coast. He subsequently served in the Mediterranean, in Egypt and in Constantinople in the Napoleonic Wars. (Updated May 2019.)
