Vice Admiral Sir Samuel Hood, K.B
A half-length portrait of Samuel Hood (1762–1814) in captain’s (over three years) full dress uniform, 1795–1812, with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath and the neck decoration of the Sicilian Order of St Ferdinand and of Merit. Lettered beneath the image with the title and the publication line: ‘Vice Admiral Sir Samuel Hood, K. B. From an original Picture by Sir William Beechey, R.A. in the Possession of the Earl of St Vincent. Drawn by W. Evans. Engraved by E. Bocquet. / Published May 10, 1813, by T. Cadell & W. Davies, Strand London.’ This portrait was engraved by E. Bocquet using an intermediary drawing by William Evans after an original painting by William Beechey, which appears to show Hood before the loss of his right arm in an action on 25 September 1805. The print was published by Thomas Cadell and William Davies in 1813 for their ‘The British Gallery of Contemporary Portraits’. (Updated May 2019.)
