Sir John Jervis... Vice Admiral of the White & Commander in Chief... at the reduction of... Martinique, St Lucia... & the Saints...
A half-length portrait of John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent (1752–1820), in admiral’s full-dress uniform, 1795–1812, with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath, his left arm outstretched. Lettered beneath the image with the title and a dedication to Francis Stephens: ‘Sir John Jervis. Knight of the Bath, Vice Admiral of the White, & Commander in Chief of his Majesty’s Ships at the Reduction of the Islands of Martinique, St Lucia, Guadaloupe, Marie-Galante, Deseada, & the Saints; From a Capital Picture in the Possession of Francis Stephens, Esqr. To whom this Plate is most Respectfully Dedicated By his Obliged Humble Servants Laurie & Whittle.’ Also lettered with the production detail and publication line: ‘T. Stuart pinxt. / Robt. Laurie fecit. / Published 14 August 1794 by Robt. Laurie & Jas. Whittle, No. 58, Fleet Street, London. Successors to the late Mr. Robt. Sayer.’ This print was engraved by Robert Laurie after a painting by Gilbert Stuart (mistakenly described as ‘T. Stuart’ in the print caption). The print was published by Laurie and his business partner James Whittle in August 1798 with a dedication to Francis Stephens, a Commissioner of the Victualling Office, who is described as the owner of Stuart’s painting.
