John Hunter
A bust-length portrait of John Hunter (1728–93) resting his chin on his left hand. Lettered beneath the image with the publication details: ‘Reynolds Pinx. / Sharp sculp. / London. Published Jany. 1. 1788, by W. Sharp.’ This print was engraved by William Sharp after an original three-quarter-length painting by Joshua Reynolds. Reynolds’s painting was produced in 1786 and is now in the collection of the Royal College of Surgeons. John Hunter was an eminent physiologist and surgeon. In his early career, he assisted his brother William Hunter in the latter’s anatomical demonstrations, before training as a surgeon and serving with the army in Portugal in 1762. Returning to London in 1763, he continued his surgical career. Over the next thirty years he occupied a number of important offices, including those of surgeon-extraordinary to the king and surgeon-general of the army. This printed is mounted with a letter of thanks from the Secretary of the Royal College Surgeons to Henry Denham, dated 6 May 1836. (Updated May 2019.)
