Ark Royal 1587 'Arca Rale Admirael'
This engraving depicts ‘Ark Royal’, commanded by Admiral Charles Howard, under full sail. It is one of a set of 10 prints, five of which were ship portraits while the others showed different stages of the Battle of the Armada, 1588. The date of publication is uncertain, but one of the action pictures was used as a plate to a work by Jean Orlers, the second edition of which was published in 1615. It has been suggested that this set of prints may be after drawings by Hendrik Cornelisz Vroom (1566-1640).
