The Barfleur a Second Rate... with a view of the Squadron Commanded by Lord Torrington in the Mediterranean

Inscribed: "The Barfleur a Second Rate carrying 90 Guns, and 680 Men, with a view of the Squadron Commanded by Lord Torrington in the Mediterranean". The inscription is repeated in French. Above the inscription (only in English): "Printed for Carrington Bowles, next the Chapter House in St. Pauls Chruch Yard London".
'Barfleur' is shown on the right-hand side of the composition.

This picture was published with varying inscriptions. The reference to Lord Torrington's Command in the Mediterranean suggests that it may be intended to represent Barfleur in 1718 when she was Admiral Sir George Byng's flagship at the Battle of Cape Passaro. However, Byng was not made a peer until 1721 and the engraving must have been published after this date.

Line engraving (hand-coloured).
