A Calm: Calme

Plate No.1. This is the first of a set of prints of which the Museum only has some not all, though there may have been 12 (see PAI7836 which seems to be another copy of the 'Calm' showing it was the image: 'Twelve Sea Pieces neatly engraved from Monamy and Van der Velde'). Others in the Museum collection are: no. 2, 'Fresh Gale' (Vent Frais) PAG6968/PAH5845; no. 4, 'A storm' (Orage) PAG6967 [q.v., for note]; no. 5, 'Shipwrack' (Naufrage) PAH7420; no. 7, 'Morning or Sun Rising' (Matin ou Soleil Levant) PAG6966/PAH5846; no. 8, 'Shipping at Noon' (trans. TBC) PAH5847; no.9, 'Evening or Sun Setting (Le Soir ou Soleil Couchant) PAH5848; no. 10, 'Night and a Ship on Fire' (Nuit & Vaisseau en Feu) PAH5849; no.11, 'Shipping with Sun under a Cloud' (trans. TBC) PAH5850; no. 12, 'Moon Light' (Claire de Lune) PAG6969. In short, nos. 3 and 6 are missing.

That said, other titles apparently either in the same set or from another similar, not in the Museum holding and of which the numbers are not yet known are: 'A Strong Gale or Squall' ( Vent Fort ou Raflais); 'A view of Sheerness' (Vue de Sheerness); 'A General Engagement' (Action Generall) and 'A view of Spithead' (Vue de Spithead). These are derived from another only partial and hand-tinted group (i.e. 12) in possession of Mr John Nicholson who enquired about them in June 2012 (TRIM ref. S12/425). In all his (which do not include nos. 8 and 12 above), the plates have been cropped to the image border with only the titles preserved (also cut out and without the image nos.) as one-line captions. Note that his 'Storm' (Orage) may in fact be a different view to the NMM one, as the French translation in the latter differs, although his also clearly had a longer English subtitle no longer readable from cropping. If they are the same image just with a wording change then we know of 14 images; if not, 15. There may be more but other collections have not yet been checked. (eg. BM). [PvdM 6/12]
