A Dutch man-of-war

This painting, executed in shades of grey, depicts the Dutch East Indiaman, De Paerel [sic, De Paerrel] (The Pearl), in starboard quarter view. Her main sails are hoisted in a following wind. She flies Dutch flags at her main mast and on her stern, along with various smaller flags. Her guns are out, but perhaps not for action as a small rowing boat approaches her starboard side. This little vessel is packed with eight men one of whom is standing in the bows with a bugle. The rudder man appears to be in Asian dress with a turban. Other ships are visible, faintly depicted, in the background.
