Charles Saunders Esqr, Vice Adml of the Blue Squadron

A three-quarter-length portrait of Charles Saunders (c. 1713–1775) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–1767, with wig. Saunders holds the hilt of his sword in his left hand and grips the crown of an anchor with his right. Lettered beneath the image with Saunders’s coat of arms and the following inscriptions: ‘J. Reynolds Pinxt. / J. McArdell fecit. / Charles Saunders Esq. Vice Admiral of the Blue Squadron of His Majesty’s Fleet & Lieut. General of His Majesty’s Marine Forces.’ The price – ‘5d.’ – is printed in the bottom right. This portrait was engraved in mezzotint by James Macardell after an original painting by Joshua Reynolds (see BHC3012). Reynolds’s painting was produced in spring 1760 and it was probably engraved around this time. (Updated April 2019).
