Coiling the cable in after tank on board the Great Eastern at Sheerness - visit of HRH the Prince of Wales May 24th
Three gigantic cylindrical tanks, to hold the coils of cable, were built in the hold of the 'Great Eastern'. The finished cable was then transferred to her at Sheerness. On 24 May 1865, the Prince of Wales visted the 'Great Eastern' and witnessed the coiling down of the cable into the hold. Mounted with PAG8276.; No.9.
