A three-quarter-length portrait of Alexander Hood (1726–1814) in captain’s undress uniform, 1748–1767, holding his sword in his right hand and leaning on a rock with a naval engagement in the background representing Hood’s ship, the ‘Minerva’, 32 guns, recapturing the ‘Warwick’, 60 guns, from the French in the Mediterranean in January 1761. Lettered beneath the image with the title: ‘Alexander, Lord Viscount Bridport, K. B. Admiral of the Red. Painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds P.R.A. Presented to Greenwich Hospital by the Viscountess Bridport.’ Also lettered with the publication details: ‘Engraved by H. Robinson. / London. Published March 1, 1831, by Harding and Lepard, Pall Mall East.’ This portrait was engraved by John Henry Robinson after Joshua Reynolds’s portrait of 1764, which is now in the National Maritime Museum (see BHC2573). Reynolds’s painting was presented to Greenwich Hospital by the sitter’s widow, Maria Sophia, Viscountess Bridport. The print was published by Harding and Lepard as an illustration in E. H. Locker's 'Memoirs of Celebrated Naval Commanders...' (1831/2). (Updated May 2019.)
