Augustus Viscount Keppel. From the original of Sir Joshua Reynolds in the collection of His Grace, the Duke of Bedford
A three-quarter-length portrait of Augustus Keppel (1725–1786) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–1767, with his hat under his left arm and holding a cane in his right hand. There is an ivy-covered cliff on the right and the sea on the left. The portrait is framed by a decorative border, incorporating Keppel’s coat of arms at the top. Lettered beneath the image with the title: ‘Augustus, Viscount Keppel Ob. 1786. From the Origin of Sir Joshua Reynolds in the Collection of His Grace the Duke of Bedford.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘Engraved by H. T. Ryall. / John Tallis & Company. London & New York.’ This print was engraved in the nineteenth century after an original portrait by Joshua Reynolds. Reynolds’s portrait was painted around 1762, after an earlier version painted in 1759. It is currently at Woburn Abbey. (Updated April 2019).
