The French ship 'Formidable' at the First Battle of Algeciras, 6 July 1801
Inscribed: “Combat D'Algesiras. Le Formidable soutient seul l'attaque de six navires anglaise et après une lutte héroïque, rentre triomphant à Cadix aux acclamations de la population, témoin de ce merveilleux combat.“ (The Battle of Algeciras. The ‘Formidable’ alone contends the attack of six English ships and after a heroic struggle returns triumphantly to the cheers of the population who witnessed this marvellous combat).
The ‘Formidable’ was Admiral Linois’ flagship at Algeciras between 6 and 12 July 1801 (he then transferred to a frigate in time for the Second Battle), and is shown centrally in starboard-quarter view, heavily engaged with the British ships that surround her. Hand-coloured. Signed by artist in plate (including an anchor mark after his name). Plate No.50.
