Situation of the Honble Company's Ship Warren Hastings, after four hours fighting and being compelled to strike to La Piemontaise.
A coloured aquatint of the capture of the East India Company’s ship Warren Hastings (in starboard stern quarter view, on the left of the picture) being captured by the French La Piemontaise (in starboard broadside view, on the right of the picture). Only the main mast remains on the Warren Hastings, on which the holed mainsail is part hoisted. The upper parts of the mainmast of the La Piemontaise have also gone overboard, but her other masts appear to be intact. She flies the French flag from her stern. Various pieces of flotsam, yards and sails bob in the water. A cutter, loaded with figures, approaches the stern of La Piemontaise.
The Warren Hastings was captured by the La Piemontaise on 21 June 1806 in the Indian Ocean, while on her return journey to London. PAG9044 is a companion picture by the same artist, depicting the prelude to this action.
