This aquatint depicts HMS Shannon (right) capturing the American frigate Chesapeake (left) on the 1st of June, 1813. The battle was short and bloody, claiming over 120 lives. Lieutenant Charles Leslie Falkiner, with George Thomas L Watt, commanded the boarding party from the Shannon, and Watt was killed (see William Laird Clowes "The Royal Navy, A History" Vol 6, p.81). Falkiner gave the artist Dodd the details to draw in this print.
